Byzantine Art at Iconastas

To celebrate the wonderful exhibition of Byzantine Art at the Royal Academy, we are priviliged to be able to show selected items from the Sharpe, Constable-Maxwell and McAlpine Collections. Many of these objects have been beautifully encased in perspex by Darren Mayes and will be on show until the beginning of December.We are showing only a few examples here on the web-site.

		Silver Roundel £ price on application Byzantine, a 10/12th.century silver roundel of Reprobus holding his staff. After carrying the infant Christ over the swollen river, he was told to plant his staff into the ground whereupon it sprouted and bore fruit. 		Menorah £ 12,500.00 Byzantine, pre 5th.Century lead Menorah.( the Menorah is one of the oldest symbols of the Jewish people, it is a seven -branched candelabrum in the Taberacle and later in the Temple in Jerusalem . A theory to its design is based on ancient Hebrew cosmology, the seven branches represent the seven heavenly bodies known at that time, the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn) size 9 x 8ins. 		Byzantine Buckle £ 2,250.00 Byzantine..5/6th.Century bronze belt buckle, inlaid with a cross in kidney shaped garnets and green glass. 		Steelyard Weight £ 4,850.00 Byzantine, 4/5th.Century a bronze steelyard counterpoise weight in the shape of a Greek Cross with raised lettering devolving as (belonging to) Theodorus, with three undeciphered letters (probably his profession). With correspondence from Dr.John Nesbitt of the Dumbarton Oaks Museum, referring to an almost indentical weight in the Ontario National Museum. 3.75 x 3ins.
